Template Basics

What is a Template?  Whenever you specify answers that would make a good model for any number of similar matters, you should save the answers as a template, which is a set of model answers that you can reuse in future sessions. For example, you might create a Template with answers that generate a pour-over Will and a trust for a married client with children from the current marriage.  This Template might have all questions answered except for client-specific information such as the names of the client and spouse and their children, the names of the successor trustees and personal representatives, and the date and place of execution.  At the other end of the spectrum, you might create a Template that contains only your custom language for one particular provision.  Templates are created from your answer file, not from the document.

You might create a template to:

Ensure consistency in standard provisions

Create "masters" for recurring situations to streamline the process

Establish provisions favoring one side versus another

Customize answers for a client or an industry

When can you create a Template?  At any time while creating an answer file, you can create a Template by selecting "Save as Template" on the File menu.

How do you create a Template?  Templates are created somewhat differently depending on the product.

For Estate Planning Products:  All estate planning products have an automated template creation feature called the Template Assistant available by selecting Template Assistant from Question 1 (Select Current Activity).  For instructions on how to use the Template Assistant, refer to the Question Help at the Template Assistant question as well as the Create Your Own Templates topic available by selecting How To at Question 1 (Select An Activity).  Also see Creating Templates for Estate-Planning Products topic.

For California Family Law products:  These products do not have an automated Template Assistant feature.  To create a template using these products, refer to the Creating Templates for California Family Law Products topic.

Note:  Before saving a an answer file as a template, be sure to add Notes to certain questions to remind yourself and others of the template's use and of the decision making reflected in the template.

How do you use a Template?  Once saved, a Template can be used by either:

(1) loading it into an open answer file (select Load Template on the Answers menu); or

(2) beginning a new answer file (click Templates at the Select Title/File dialog box).

See also 2 Ways to Use Templates topic.

In either case, a dialog box will be presented asking you to select the Template you want to load or open.

A template file is identified by the extension .xmp and is stored in the product folder for the Title that created the template.  For instance, templates for the Florida Wills & Trusts product are stored in the 'fl_wt' folder, typically found in the following path:

C:\Program Files\Lawgic\fl_wt
