All estate-planning products have an automated template creation feature called the Template Assistant available by selecting Template Assistant from Question 1 (Select an Activity).
The Template Assistant allows you to create a template from your current answer file by automatically clearing only client-specific answers, such as names, addresses, specific dispositions, etc. It saves all other ‘fact-pattern’ answers, such as whether or not you create a credit shelter or QTIP trust, etc.
When you go to use the Template, the program will only present the cleared ‘client-specific’ answers and will skip over the pre-answered ‘fact-pattern’ ones. This saves a tremendous amount of time. Of course, you can change any answer that has been pre-answered or skipped.
Creating a Template Using the Template Assistant
Following are instructions for converting an existing answer file into a Template where you want to include most of the answers from that answer file in your new Template.
|
Step 1: At the Select Title/File dialog box, select Files to select the answer file you want to use as the basis for your Template. (Skip this step if that answer file is already open.) Step 2: Select Save as Template on the File menu and name and save your new Template file. Step 3: Click Select Title/File on the File menu and click the Templates button. At the Open Template screen select the Template you just created and click OK to open the template. (Note: The template file name will not be displayed. Rather, it will say NEW FILE at the top left corner of your screen). Step 4:(Optional): The Template Assistant automatically clears only client-specific information. If you also want to clear any non-client-specific answers from your Template file, follow Steps 4(a) -4(e) below. Otherwise, skip Step 4 and go to Step 5. a. At Question 1 (Select an Activity), select Template Assistant and click Continue. You will be taken to the Template Assistant question. Then select Browse the Navigator. [This will suppress question suppression and make it easier to go to the questions you wish to modify using the Navigator.] b. Using the Navigator, click on the question(s) whose answer you want to clear. c. Click on the Flag icon in the lower left corner of the question window to flag the answer. Repeat Steps 3b and 3c until you've selected all answers that you want to clear. d. Select Clear Multiple on the Answers menu, select Flagged Answers when asked which questions to clear, and click OK. e. Optional: To clear all REPEAT members, do not use Steps 4b-4d. Instead, go to the REPEAT Control question and select Clear All Answers. Step 5: Select Template Assistant at Question 1 (Select an Activity). You will be taken to the Template Assistant question. Step 6: Select Clear client-specific answers and click Continue. Step 7: Select Save as Template from the File menu again and select the template from the list. Before saving you should enter a description in the Description box. (When subsequently selecting a template to open at the Select Title/File screen, click the Description button and you or your colleagues can read this description to determine whether this is the right template to open). Click Save. A file overwrite box will appear. Click OK. Step 8 (optional): It is recommended that you mark your template ‘Read-only’ to avoid overwriting it in the future. To do this open Windows Explorer (or My Computer). Browse to the folder that corresponds to the title that you own. All title folders are located in the ‘Lawgic’ folder. For instance, the Florida Wills & Trusts folder is “fl_wt” and is located in: C:\Program Files\Lawgic\fl_wt. All templates have a .xmp file extension. To mark a template Read-only, highlight the file, right-mouse click and select Properties. Click the Read-only box and click OK. |

Creating a User Profile Template
There are certain questions that ask user-specific information that you will want to answer the same way in every answer file you create. To avoid answering those same questions each time you create a new answer file, create a User Profile Template containing the answers you always want to include.
|
Step 1. Start the program and open a new answer file by selecting New at the Select Title/File dialog box (or point to Select Title/File on the File menu from within the Lawgic program.) Step 2. Select Template Assistant at Question 1 (Select an Activity). You will be taken to the template assistant question. Step 3. Select Create User Profile. A follow-up question will allow you to specify whether you want to answer questions about attorney information, references, formatting and/or witnesses information. Step 4. Click Continue until you answer all questions presented. A final question will ask whether you want to print your user profile or save it as a Template. (Note: If you choose "Print user profile," you will be taken to the "All Questions Answered" dialog box from which you can send the user profile to your word processor.) Select Save this file as a Template. You will be returned to the Title Page. Step 5: Select Save as Template from the File menu and name and save your Template. You might want to enter a description in the Description box. (When subsequently selecting a template to open at the Select Title/File screen, click the Description button and you or your colleagues can read this description to determine whether this is the right template to open.) Step 6 (optional): It is recommended that you mark your template ‘Read-only’ to avoid overwriting it in the future. |
Each time you start a new client answer file you should load your User Profile Template. See 2 Ways to use Templates topic.
